Chilled Blue Sky

A beautiful blue sky cast across our streets today.....  But don't be deceived by the twinkling of the sun, as the chill still lingered.  Come on England, it's June tomorrow and I'd love to get a few outings of my new summery buys.

Maybe I'm soft, from living too long in Portugal, but tonight when I had to dash to an important meeting, I still had to grab my warm coat!!!

Still a firm old favourite.
My classic Fendi bag that I have used for years and sure, I will use for years to come.

A Skinny Jean Song

Last night I had been invited to a 'Song Night' which was raising money for a local charity whose families have children with disabilities.  I like to be able to support charities, especially local ones.

I went with no expectations of the night, having no knowledge of who would be performing and was totally blown away by the talent that was before us.

I am sure last night I witnessed some girls to look out for in the future.
Where is Simon Cowell when you need him!!!

My outfit was very last minute, as I had originally planned to wear a skirt.  I get so tired of always being in my skinny jeans, but the English weather (especially at the moment) doesn't seem to permit anything other!   It was drizzly and chilly, so in the end the good old faithful RIVER ISLAND skinnies came out!

It was a wonderful night with lots of pennies raised for a very worthy cause.

Precious Days...

The older you get, the wiser you become and the more you realise that true, true friends are precious gems that you hold on to.  With my world, I know my closest friends, by the fact that you can be away for months and months on end..... but that day when you finally see each other again, it feels like you were never apart.

Finally, yesterday I was reunited with one of my closest friends on this earth and it really was a 'beautiful' moment, to see her beaming smile after nearly 3 years apart......   It was an incredible feeling to finally see her again, but so strange in that it felt as though those years away had never happened....

But so much has happened, including a beautiful son for her and a daughter for myself!

So I rest happy, that at the moment, we are finally not thousands of miles apart!!!!

Hold your closest dear to you...

Peace & Love...

My room at my family home in the UK is my haven..... cosy and vibrant, it only conjures up good memories and happy vibes.  I'm just home from home when I'm flipping between Portugal and the UK.

I'm loving URBAN OUTFITTERS tshirts at the moment.  I love to dress them up with skirts and heels or team them with my skinny jeans or shorts (depending on the country!) for day and with a little costume jewellery and lippy you're well away!!!

The BARRY M nail polishes are definitely one of my favourites and so after reading in a magazine about the new craze of the 'Instant Nail Effects', me, being me, I was eager to get my hands on one to try!!!  So as I type, I'm sat here half way through the process and will post my verdict pronto!!!

So greetings from a very Hearty CharlieHearts and before I forget a very Happy 17th May to all of my Norwegian friends xxx

P.S - Keep posted for the new giveaway....

Shopping in Skulls

Back to England I return!!
Leaving sunny, sunny Portugal to a grey windy UK.... but I don't care, because it's home :)

I have lots of grand plans for the time that I will spend here, including the launch of Shop CharlieHearts.  This has been a really exciting project that has happened so quickly from dream to reality and I just can't wait for it finally to be out there!!  Tick Tock, Tick Tock!!!

Ever since I bought a scarf adorned with skulls in Camden, London years and years ago, they have stuck fast as a staple 'point' of my accessories.  My new jewellery line is a strong reflection of myself and you will see quite a few items embellished with them.

I just love a successful day at the shops!!!

From Mother...

I'm backwards and forwards at the moment, so much so, that I can't even keep up with myself.
My blog is getting so backdated in it all, that I promise to up my antics and get back on track!!
Next week should be a more relaxed week, so I should catch up with myself!!

Well, as you can see from these photos, they were taken last week whilst I was in the UK.  I had such a fabulous time with family and friends.  I also finally got to wear my Grandfather's watch that had been at the jewellers to be altered for me....    The watch means a lot to me as it is seeped with history.   Given to him by his Mother (thus the engraving on the inside) it has now been passed to me.

As I've said before, at my family home in England I still have a lot of stuff and I always find an old treasure, this time it was my 'Miu Miu' bag, that I took great delight in 'reviving'!
The sunglasses were a new purchase from TOPSHOP.

I'm glad blogger is back... what happened to it these last days??  I'm totally technology impatient when it's not a 'click' away!!!

The Legendary Martha Graham...

"I have spent all my life with dance and being a dancer. It's permitting life to use you in a very intense way. Sometimes it is not pleasant. Sometimes it is fearful. But nevertheless it is inevitable.
Martha Graham

Martha Graham was born on May 11, 1894 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Graham danced and choreographed for more than 70 years and her influence on dance was truly phenomenal, being likened to that of Stravinskys influence on music and Picasso's on the visual arts.
She performed at The White House (the first dance ever to), traveled abroad as an ambassador for culture and also received the USA's highest civillian award - Presidential Medal of Freedom.

In 1925, Martha was employed by the Eastman School of Music where Rouben Mamoulian was head of the School of Drama.Together they produced the short two color film called The Flute of Krishna, featuring Eastman students. Mamoulian left Eastman shortly thereafter and Graham chose to leave also, even though she was asked to stay on.

The Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance was established the following year.

In 1936 she created "Chronicle", it began a new era of contemporary dance.  The piece brought serious issues to the stage for the general public in a very dramatic manner as it was influenced by  by the Wall Street Crash, the Great Depression and the Spanish Civil War.  Through the dark setting of the scenery and costumes it created an element of isolation and depression.

In 1948 she married Erick Hawkins,  he had been the very first man to dance with her company in 1938 and joined the following year as a permanant member and dancing many leading roles.  He left in 1951 and they divorced in '54.

For most of her career Graham would not allow recordings of her dances nor to be filmed or photographed. She believed the performances should exist only live on the stage. At one point she even burned volumes of her diaries and notes to prevent them from being seen.  In later years her thinking on the matter evolved and others convinced her to let them recreate some of what was lost.

Though Graham had started her career at an age that was considered late for a dancer. She was still dancing by the late 1960s and her works from this era included roles for herself which were more acted than danced and relied on the movement of the company dancing around her.

In the years that followed her departure from the stage Graham sank into a deep depression fueled by views from the wings of young dancers performing many of the dances she had choreographed for herself and her former husband. Graham's health declined precipitously as she abused alcohol to numb her pain.

In Blood Memory she wrote:
It wasn't until years after I had relinquished a ballet that I could bear to watch someone else dance it. I believe in never looking back, never indulging in nostalgia, or reminiscing. Yet how can you avoid it when you look on stage and see a dancer made up to look as you did thirty years ago, dancing a ballet you created with someone you were then deeply in love with, your husband? I think thatcircle of hell Dante omitted.
[When I stopped dancing] I had lost my will to live. I stayed home alone, ate very little, and drank too much and brooded. My face was ruined, and people say I looked odd, which I agreed with. Finally my system just gave in. I was in the hospital for a long time, much of it in a coma.
Graham not only survived her hospital stay but she blossomed and in 1972 she gave up drinking and returned to her studio, reorganized her company and went on to choreograph ten new ballets and many revivals. Her last completed ballet was 1990's Maple Leaf Rag.

Graham choreographed until her death in New York City from pneumonia in 1991, aged 96.
